Next La Nogalera the main town centre square – where the dark, grotty, and stinky subterranean train station is located – was once a hub of young summer tourists from Britain, Italy, Germany and Scandinavia.
In the late 50s it was arty, in the late 60s it was wilde, in the late 70s it was free, and in the late 80s it was manic; less Sinatra and more Sinita.
I was a teenager in the second half of the 80s and in the summer months the main road Avenida Palma de Mallorca which cuts through Torremolinos would be gridlocked with traffic at 3am.
Katya Bauval, Gigi Ganzoni and Fiona Bauval in Dynamite c.1987 ish |
Our favourite drinking spot in the town centre was a rock bar called Danish Dynamite, a place where beer was cheap (100 pesetas, about 45 pence at the time), music was good (ACDC) and nobody considered the need for ID (we were 15).
Diego in Danish Dynamite, our favourite high school hang-out. |
It was run by two big body builder guys in the late 20s early 30s with long heavy metal style hair, one of them I remember was called Diego (pictured).
Here my friends and I would knock down shots of cheap tequila singing along to Soft Cell’s Tainted Love, thinking we were the shit. Chicks dug us, we thought.
It wasn’t until the 90s any of us realized Tainted Love was a song about homosexual love.Oh well.
What made us go to DD in the first place is a mystery to me, I don't know if our older school mates used it before us or if it was a chance occasion for a school event which grew from there.
Hard Rock Torremolinos
Kenneth Engstrom at Hard Rock Torremolinos |
In our last year of high school we could hardly believe our luck when we heard that the world-famous Hard Rock Cafe had chosen Torremolinos to open their latest venture.
This was 1989, a couple of decades before the Hard Rock Marbella in Puerto Banus would open for business (I've got a cap).
Being American school kids (albeit in Spain, and not American mostly) we had seen the t-shirts: Hard Rock Cafe New York, Hard Rock Cafe Tokyo, etc and could hardly wait to get our Hard Rock Torremolinos t-shirts.
To be truthful when the dark den of iniquity which was the Hard Rock Torremolinos opened we only knew something was not quite legit when we saw the dodgy imitation Hard Rock Cafe Torremolinos logo.
The venue's founder, the charismatic Norwegian Kenneth Engstrom, explains that he and friend came to Spain with the objective of opening a bar
"We found this closed down 'club',it has formerly been discobar and likes...striptease I think, as well as other things," he said.
"We came to an agreement with the owner and then started to paint [it] black!"
They knew that it would not be easy to get people to walki down a narrow staircase down to a dingy basement so they would need a 'catchy' name.
"We were big hard rock fans so we basically created a place which we would to to hang out in ourselves," he said.
Meanwhile, my friends and I had never actually been to a real Hard Rock so thought we were safe to assume it was some dark cavern painted black with, erm... hard rock music blaring out which happened to make cool t-shirts.
So when we walked into Hard Rock Torremolinos into the dark cellar with heavy metal music we didn't realise it was a far cry from the sticky ribs-over-priced-rock-memorabilia-commercial shit-holes that - in my opinion - they really are.
In retrospect our Torremolinos was in many ways the only Hard Rock which deserved then name it carried.
In total, Hard Rock Cafe Torremolinos was open for about 8 years until the crowds shifted to Malaga City or the then hip Puerto Marina and Plaza Sol y Mar in Benalmadena gradually sucked the life out of the Torremolinos bars scene, without punters to feed the club.
"We couldnt live only on [the trade of] Saturdays," said Kenneth, "which were going down as well since Malaga was getting better bars and a lot of our cutomers were staying there."
Although my friends and I had mostly left Spain after finising high school, only being able to enjoy Hard Rock's first year hear, the club became a legendary hangout from younger generations from my school (Sunny View) as well many Spanish youngsters, many of whom can still be spotted on a Saturday night at La Posada de Torremolinos, one of the few decent bars in town today.
Kenneth has left Torremolinos with a rich rock legacy of which he can be proud, and as the tumble weeds roll down the once thriving town centre on anu given Saturday night, he and everyone who made it theirs for those 8 years can boast, if nothing else, to having created the most real fake Hard Rock Cafe in the world, ever.

Welcome with 'Open Arms'
Unfortunately for me now, we never particularly liked any of them, although in two of the cases, I'm not sure why.
The always awful Open Arms – a crap British pub located above our beloved Danish Dynamite ( closed for a while) - closed just a couple of years ago in 2012ish.
This one I know we didn't like, and
Lee Mardle worked at the El Open Arms in 1988.
"It was indeed a bit of a cheesy/tacky place but it was also a bit of a community hub for the workers out there," he says.
"It was run by Steve and owned by Mario at the time. I was a prop for the summer with Wolfy, Steve, Yahtzek, Spence and a girl from Manchester called Karen I think.
"The main benefit was that the bar supported a nightclub, Picasso's which you got free drinks in every night after work! My girlfriend, a swedish girl called Madeleine worked for Traffic Lights Bar, which was situated next to Four Aces Bar just off the main road through Torremolinos," says Lee.
"Her bar was affiliated to the Venya nightclub around the corner which meant we could get hammered in both places for free!! I drank at Jax bar quite a lot, the only other clubs I can remember where Pipers, which was too expensive for most of the workers, and Borsalino Palace in Benalmedena.".
"Picassos was located below a shopping mall which had escalators going everywhere, across the road from the top of San Miguel street. There was another bar called the Zebra Bar just to the left of this..I lived with Maddy, Wolfie and Pernilla in Congresso 6 for a while and on the La Colina complex before that.. Crazy Days!!"
Diagonally across the square stands the half decent but worst-named rock bar in the world ‘Garfields’
(as in the lasagne-eating cat), and across from there Bar Amsterdam (Est 1968), a narrow rock bar with a large terrace, run by a couple of expat brothers around my age, which I think I used to know from somewhere.
Aside from the busy gay bars in La Nogalera and a few bars dotted about Garfields has been one of the few which continues to attract a crowd on a weekend except for perhaps La Posada mentioned earlier.
Pueblo Blanco
The other nightlife area where we used to hang out in was Pueblo Blanco (White village), a maze of pedestrianized narrow alleyways below flats built in 1975 between Calle Skal and Calle Casablanca and which since I can remember have been at odds with the bars below over noise.
What was once a lively area for nightlife is now a more civilized dozen or so restaurants.
Some say the beginning of the end occurred in November 1994 when following a flood of complaints from local residents, police took action. Of the 48 bars in Pueblo Blanco, 12 did not have opening licenses.
Now it seems local residents finally won the war on fun. For years even before our time a hip bar called Gypsy was the place to be [do you remember the original Gypsy?], this later became Black Gypsy when taken over by three Italians.
One of them, an ex theatre woman called Lorena Valentini, eventually married one of my best friends, Chendo and they now live in Singapore with their son Victor.
Lorena recalls the 1994 clampdown on fun: "the police started randomly to 'visit' the bars at the peak of the season and, like in the case of the Black Gipsy that had all the permissions and payments in order, would find the excuse of tolerating the consumption of light drugs in order to shut the bar down for over two months."
"The loss of most of the annual income and the decision to sell come as the result," Lorena remembers. "Each bar was having different issues but on top of it there was the pressure of the new home owners that coming from all over Europe had invested in what they expected to be the paradise of Pueblo Blanco."
In the mid-late 80s, before Black Gypsy, the was our high school hangout: Cheers.
It was owned by Gerry, the father of one of our classmates at the local American school we all went to, Sunny View, a British chap by the name of Glenn Davies (or Dangerous Davies as we called him for some reason, I think it was because he knocked out some English prat outside Splash one time).
When he opened it we deserted Danish Dynamite as our weekend bar and moved on to Cheers in a show of support to Glenn.
Although Cheers was one of the smallest bars in the planet, Glenn’s dad Gerry let us decide what music to play.
A new LA rock bank, Guns’n’Roses, had released their first album so Sweet Child of Mine became one of our anthems at Cheers. As before, beer was cheap, ID was flexible (we were almost adults by this point).
Shawarma Simon, Pueblo Blanco: Best shawarma's in town... |
But it would be unfair to mention Pueblo Blanco and not remind us that in 1991, next door to Black Gypsy opened a very small bar which had a cool logo.
The nervous owners were two young chaps: a German called Frank and a Spanish guy called Lorenzo who had decided to open ZZ Pub a tiny bar which devoted its last hour to heavy metal music like AC/DC.
Lorenzo was dating Carina Welsh a girl from our school (Sunny View), who I once dated, and whose parents owned the legendary Second Hand Book Shop on Calle San Miguel. We had previously played basketball against Frank, Lorenzo and their boys, and as far as I remember they were damned good too.
Small world this Torremolinos of ours...
Although ZZ Pub would follow the same fate as Black Gypsy, moving to new bigger premises in Malaga in 1994 with a third business partner Enrique, the one there has been going strong ever since.
The ZZ chaps also opened one in Puerto Marina, but being ahead of their time as Puerto Marina was still releatively new, it eventually closed or was sold on [anyone know why and when?].
Torremolinos has not been a major party destination for young people for decades, nevertheless there is a buzzing nightlife for the under 20s by the beach between Playamar and Los Alamos.
Again the ZZ Pub boys can claim to be the first in setting up a trendy chiringuito in Los Alamos, which although once stood alone, and people doubted anyone would dress up to go out on the beach, has been a massive success and led to numerous imitations.
-------------------------------------------------------
I would be very keen to hear from you which places in Torremolon is were your hang-outs of choice during this period or any others.
There are many names that come to mind: Pipers (we we went to the under 18s night on a Friday until 10 when we were kids - there is a blog about it in Spain - click here); Hard Rock Cafe; Splash; Paladium; some club in la Nogalera which I think was called Purple something or other.
Any others?

El Palladium nowadays occupies what was earlier the famous disco Tiffany's (where in the 70s you could get high by just walking in a taking a couple of deep breaths), and before that, one of the three cinemas that were in Torremolinos in the 60s

DeleteAhhhhh Open Arms, fond memories, better known as "Open Legs".
ReplyDeleteour favorite bar in the early to mid 70's was the beer keller. it was an underground establishment on san miguel street, somewhere around the half way mark. i believe thats where the sunny view high school students would hang out on weekends.
ReplyDeleteIf you've got any old photos of your nights out in Torremolinos you can upload them for all to enjoy on the facebook page http://www.facebook.com/MemoriesOfTorremolinos
ReplyDeleteWell, for me it was hard rock and New york. I was working in New York bar in 1994-95, that was owned by Marife and Reidar. Oh, how many great memories! :)
ReplyDeleteMr Snarl, as I was an 80s teen I missed out on the 90s scene here. Please add more memories about the 90s party scene so I can add a 90s party people page!
DeleteMy TorreTime was in the 70's. Arrived from Canada in Malaga in July 1972 without a place to stay. Tourist kiosk at the Malaga airport found me a hotel in La Nogalera, Recidencia del Pozo. What a location...in the middle of it all. Young Scandinavians, Germans and some Brits...all ready to party in the discos and Spanish bodegas and expat bars. This coupled with the beach scene in the day, cheap wine, beer and accommodation...priceless. Returned in August of 1976 and 1978, same part of town, not much changed except an influx of US and Canadian young people, all ready to party and hook up. A great time was had by all. Finally returned in 1980, as part of a southern Spain driving tour with my new bride. Noticed the start of the changes as described by other posters. Disappointed.
ReplyDeleteI went to school in torremolinos from 1983 onwards. Calle san miguel and the train station, steps to the beach and the hippies playing guitars......great days. I remember a strange indian type guy who used to hang around the station with lit insence.wonder what happened to him.
ReplyDeletePs. Open Arms now shut....
ReplyDeleteI was the dude who painted signs for El Open Arms in the 80's. Popeye was one of mine.... So there!
ReplyDeleteI knew Mario and Marino they used to work in Hardy's oppositi the affair as far as I can remember ,you must be one of the "survivors" scoucers nice fellas,I am sure they helped open the open arms its all a bit of a blur ha ha anyone remember Maggie's farm?

DeleteI played washboard at Maggie's Farm for a couple of weeks in 1977 I think--what a crazy place.
Delete1978, and we played there for at least a month... then were politely asked to resign, so Bernie wouldn't have to fire us.
Delete..actually the pix of the 3 girls Katya,Giovana and Fiona.....K and F are my two lovely daughter s..long B4 all this , there was another Torremolinos 1967 to 1971..with Black Pussy Cat (carihuela) Shakespear bar, lA Mañana ,Pedro´s etc...in 1968 ...the famous book "THE CHILDREN OF TORREMOLINOS" was originally written by James Mitchner ...I actually have a sighned copy..
ReplyDeleteCome on dude, you know more than this about the history of Torremolinos and especially Playamar. Get it down for history's sake before we all take that big step.
DeleteI arrived with a friend from Dublin in 79, but his brother had been there years before, which was where we got the idea.....tell us more.

You forgot Marco's Minibar, expat-hangout in the mid eighties... Calle Guitanillias.
ReplyDeleteGreat place to stay! They had a small stage, and the beer was free while playing the guitar!
Ah yes, went there most evenings with my parents whilst there on holiday in 1982. And I played the acoustic guitar on stage too, for free orange juice... I was only 12 at the time :)
DeleteMy Mum and dad worked There in Marco's minibar!!!
DeleteAlfredo, great blog. Congratulations! I think we all went to DD for the girls...
ReplyDeletewhat about discotheque Pipers. Big place, motorcycle upside down on ceiling, waterfall, raising dance floor. Great times. Also I remember back street called 'the combat area'.
ReplyDeleteI took a lot of trip to Torremolinos from 1969 to 1976, in 69 we (my sis and I ) did go to the discotek's Tiffany and Pipers, later in 1970 the discotek Barbarella came and there was also Tam Tam outside Torremolinos, good old times :) and lot of fun
DeleteHa ha yeah the combat zone that was Marcos minibar street ,anyone remember black Paul with the bump on his head used to walk around with an axe on his hip sold acid ha ha
DeleteOhhhh Black Paul!!! He was lovely!!
Deletestill love the music :) they played at the disco
ReplyDeleteMy name is Carolina. Me and my friend Anna were in Torremolinos in -85 and -86. In -86 we worked all summer in Danish Dynamite, it was then owned by an Hawaian man with a danish wife. We lived in an apartment in the center of town and had the summer of our lives. We went to the Queen concert in august, it turned out to be the second last concert they ever gave. One of my best memories. The pub we loved was "the Irish affair". All the people working there as props, and all the tourists we learned to know. Wonderful times!
ReplyDeleteI worked there in 85 I had been living in Sweden and wanted to get back there Diego above was an old friend by then we had worked together in the affair in 79 when Noel had it I think by 85 Neill and a rich American owned it Neill was a nice guy Steve was a bit well don't want to be unkind he did not ever really fit in
DeleteI moved to Torremolinos in 1983, and at the age of 13 coming from a rural english background it was a major culture shock! Saying that I loved every moment of it, I still live in Malaga province and its very sad to see Torremolinos now! I also went to the Queen concert, my first ever concert I remember taking the bus which took 2 hours in them days, and having the time of my life!
DeleteJust been having a conversation with a colleague at work about our 'younger days'. Am sure we must have crossed paths, we propped at Jax Bar for Melina and Prisilla, and at DDs. Friends and I stayed at Noel's apartment and he and his wife lived above. Have fantastic memories of the summer of 1986 and still have some great pics of our time there - we girls did have some fun!
DeleteDid noel cook his rabbit curry? It was fantastic!
DeleteOMG, loving this blog. I worked at Pipers 1985/86 dancing in the box. We lived on Calle Peligro (spelling could be wrong) I remember Neil from Jax bar, and he had the Top Spot bar that was underground somewhere with escalators, and I remember Noel from Dinamite and people from Open Arms, and others, and Paco who worked for Noel at Dinamite, wow so many great memories, does anyone remember William who had Purple Dream and Ingy who was the DJ and Lolo worked behind the bar?? I put my name in the Comment as so it didn't come as anonymous, hope all are well..
DeleteI was repping then and went to The Queen concert too it was fantastic. Great memories, the Squash Club run by 2 couples whose names escape me at the moment and Barry's Bar in Montemar were my daytime haunts with the open arms and Big Jim Farley's amongst other at night.
DeleteMy name is Rob,I am from Holland.I worked in Torremolinos 1985/86.Worked mainly for Bar Amsterdam which was owned by Bradey and Connie. What happened to them?.Also worked for Bar Rembrandt, open arms, eagle bar.Drunk often in Irish affair and Jax bar.Best time of my life..cant believe its 30 years ago....
ReplyDeleteWe must have met ,bar Amsterdam was that the place on the same street as the affair (am i in the right place)did great hamburgers,we used to tick em (pay later)I am sure that that was the year that black Paul with the axe chased slasher (a big toothy Spanish guy with a tattoo of the hulk on his back) from there (slasher jumped out of the window trying to get away) up the street, slasher had said to Paul "tomorrow black man you many problems" Paul replied "today you many problems" and took out his axe, that was when slasher jumped out of the window

DeleteAll the best
Zoe
My name's Zoe from Doncaster but I'm from Scotland as well, I also worked in bar Amsterdam (Michael the son and the other one with the red hair both still run the bar last I'd spoken to them on Facebook. Always get their names mixed and worked Piper's on San Miguel street the big 7floor underground one Not there now though in 95/96 time though, I lived with Scottish Alan that works at piggies bar, Australian George (a girl) Sam from London (girl) and Mate who i shared a room with lol, I'd love to know what their all doing now,
DeleteHere I'm repeating myself lol answering old comment I've already answered 😂
DeleteI am not sure that place was called bar Amsterdam it was a little food bar at the square end of Antonio giron sorry
ReplyDeleteBar Amsterdam was along the south side of the RR tracks, on the floor level of the Nogalera. I used to go there for their Steak tartar, and at one time for a Dutch tour guide who hung out there and who I fancied.
ReplyDeletethats the bar Amsterdam. It has been there since early 70's.Its a Spanish music bar now if I am right. Not sure why still called Bar Amsterdam...
ReplyDeleteIn the same street as the Irish affair was another Dutch bar called bar Rembrandt.I did also work there in 1985.The owners Benny and Hennie used to sit in the window of the bar.there was a little wooden staircase to get in.
That was it Bar Rembrandt, where slasher(a big toothless Spaniard with a tattoo of the hulk on his back)jumped out of the window to escape Paul and his axe,we used to tick hamburgers in all of the time
DeleteThere was a Guy---big Moroccan, black guy that worked at Playamar for food services in 1970/71. His name was "Monchi" He killed his wife, stabbed her to death, and was sent to jail. He served his time and later came back. To me, he was always a laid back, gentle person.
DeleteI lived in Pueblo Blanco in '79 and partied at Tiffany's and Borsalino's next door. Worked at Jorge & Alvaro's flamenco "Bar Museo Taurino" in La Carihuela, slinging tortillas espanolas. Miss the hot weather walking down La Nogalera to the beach, stopping by to eat the gambas ala plancha. Super nice people, generous and peaceful. At night, got the highest high on the long steps, whew!
DeleteI remember Bar Amsterdam, I worked at Pipers early 80s, fun days, will have to look for pix and post soon,
DeleteLooked on streetview and the little street were Jax,the affair and Rembrandt bar were located looks very different now.The corner were Jax was is some kind of clothing shop now.Looks like all the bars have been replaced with little shops?Mayber part to do with torremolinos trying to get a better image? I wonder when all those bars dissapeared? I suppose nothing stay's the same.Things change after all those years but that little corner of the street were jax was has a special meaning for me....
ReplyDeleteyea mate, that was the best spot for partyin. i worked at jax bar in 82 and 83. great memories.
DeleteI worked in jax bar in 84, happy days
DeleteWorked in teh Open arms in 88 for a while. Some mad mad people passed through there. The Scouse cat burgler. The two guys from Rugby with the roofing business, the scaffolder from bristol. Scottish Allen (who I shared a flat with and who scarpered without paying rent) and Scottish Caroline and Alison who I also shared a flat with. Mad mad times.
ReplyDeleteI worked in El Open Arms 87/88/89 and lived with Scottish Allan for most of 87/88. We may well have met. I had some great times there and worked over the winter of 87/88.
DeleteHaha. I also worked there and shared a place with Scottish Alan for a month or so.... He still owes me his share of the rent!
DeleteI remember the two guys from rugby (scaffolders) who had a line in dodgy roof repairs, a cat burglar from Liverpool and a couple of Scottish girls I shared a flat with for a few months. I came back to the UK on a return half of a ticket from a chap from Bristol with the intention of returning for the season but didn't for various reasons. Wild times. Got any pictures of the guys from that time?
I think I remember you. We may have briefly shared an apartment. I don't have any photos but still speak to the Swedish girl I was going out with then. She may well have some photos.
Deletewas that when wolfie was there?

DeleteHi 42inblue, sorry just got this message 6yrs later. this is Georgie, moved to Torremolinos in Dec 85. Stayed at Benal Beach, tried selling timeshare for 15mins, then my friend Sue and I met Tony in the late pool bar, forgot the name of it. And he use to work at Pipers so we tried out for dancing there and ended up dancing in the box at the front of the club. Have a lot of fabulous memories. New Neil from Top Spot and Stefan, and dated Lolo for a while. Remembered Open Arms and Dynamite bar, so much to say. feel free to email me at britgeorgie@aol.com if you want to hear more. Love the blog..
DeleteDoes anyone recall the daughter of the owner/proprietor of Beachcomber? In the early 80's she actually was a nanny for a local family in the area but her parents worked/owned the Beachcomber in 1983-1984 timeframe? Tom
ReplyDeleteI think the daughter's name was Dawn Adams and it may not have been the Beachcomber Bar - I cannot remember...Dawn was a caresitter (nanny) for a family in the area and was originally from England. The parents ran the bar and she worked for a family nearby caring for their children.
DeleteDo you know what ever happend to Dawn?
DeleteHi ! Awesome blog!!! I was wondering maybe some of you knew my mum and dad Paul and Paloma?

DeleteYeah sure, about 1983 I guess
I was a tall fella for my age Stef, even sent some freinds down to meet him some time after,I hung there for a few months mostly in Marco's, how are they?
Greetings all,
ReplyDeleteThis has been a great trip down memory lane. While going to college in France a buddy and I traveled to Torremolinos for a week--on a very small budget....in the winter of 1984. My buddy was obsessed with The Drifters and was determined to find a a place to stay for free. He succeeded when we found Marcos Mini Bar. I lovely ex-Pat California divorcee let us sleep on her couch and floor and we spent most days at the beach and nights at either Marcos' or at a woman named Mary (Brit expat) who posted nightly dinner menus that for a small fee we could go to her house and eat. If you have any stories of your visit (That you can write about....:-} pleas feel free to post, as time is quickly passing and soon all the great stories will be lost. ReplyDeleteI worked as a prop for John Henry's in 88, then el open arms, which I got sacked from after walking into the backroom and finding, Steve a couple of policemen and what looked like a pile of icing sugar. Worked at Picasso's after that and whatever the neighbour to the four aces was called. Favourite bars were Danish Dynamite, the swedish systembokaget, which I think was next door to DD and the harp bar.
ReplyDeleteI was 14 at the time and told everyone I was 17 - remember Lee and Karen, Charlie who worked the door at El open arms and mick who also did prop work for them. Not been back since but going for a visit next week... Fondest memory has to be the tall drag who danced flamenco on the street, with his aging mother or wife in tow.
He was there for years he was a Danish guy that had implants and he used to get his tits out after he danced
DeleteI,m Lee!! remember Karen well, and that backroom..Lee Mardle on Facebook
DeleteWorked at Picasso's after that and whatever the neighbour to the four aces was called
Deletetraffic Light I think
A friend of mine was living in Spain at the time and tells me the story of a disco that you had to go down some steps and behind the door it was a large space with various dancefloors and a stream running through it and girls in bikinis. Does anyone know of such a place
ReplyDeletePiper's! I used to work in bikini
Delete(dancing in a cadge) there was a swimmingpool under The cadge.
It was 1987 I think. 🌺💚💄
I worked in many bars and opened fro breakfasts at 4 am for breakfasts where all the props used to come in on the way home I bought a studio in the congresso1 lived there 10 years from 83 to 93 loved it 😍😍😍😍😍
ReplyDeleteI went back some time ago to see it again after 32 years..
ReplyDeleteAll the bars at la Nogalera and Combat alley from back in the day's have gone.
Only Bar Amsterdam still excist.Spoke to some people and during the nineties the
authorities there really clamped down on noise pollution from bars.~~No load music was allowed to come out of bars anymore. Therefore they all shut down in the area.
La Nogalera has received a facelift.Fancy pavement and a fountain but little atmosphere I closed my eyes and could hear the music from El open arms and Danish Dynamite again. The props,I was one of them, having a good time(drunk)All gone, very timid now.Combat alley deserted now.For sure I know nothing stay's the same..
On my last evening I took one last stroll over La Nogalera, looked back and thought at
least we had it all those years ago on how the square used to be...
Does anyone have any photos or stories connected with the famous Jack’s Bar in Torremolinos ?
ReplyDeleteHello, just have been watching the new Netflix Series Drug Squad: Costa del Sol and all my memories from Torremolinos party time in 1979 came back to me. I lived there for 6 months with a German woman (Mardou), which had a bar on top of the hills behind Torremolinos: la Espuela. I worked there that summer, the gypsies would bring the tourists up there on horses. Best summer of my life. When we closed the bar we would hit the night life in Torremolinos. Besides some of the more famous once in the strip I also had fun at a place called the Piano Bar, a dance club close to the beach, the gypsies horse staples were there too. Omg, I was just 21, dancing was my life, I preferred also the traditional Spanish dances and also disco music. Rich Kuwaitis would pay for drinks in the clubs and going out didn’t cost a thing and no “favors” expected in return. I had never a bad experience even when partying until 5 in the morning. I am so glad to having had these wonderful happy times, full of joy of living and having fun. I am 61 now, happy, that I was able to experience these carefree times. I still have a collection of receipts, entrance tickets, beer coasters, etc. from that year. I returned a few years later, going to an open air concert in Marbella with Stevie Wonder and have been back in Torremolinos ever so often. The last time last year in November 2019 with my 81 year old mother, which back then in 1979 came to pick me up, because she was afraid I would never come back home to Germany. Torremolinos and Malaga are my most favorite places in the world.

ReplyDeleteHi! This is Charlotte from Sweden, although I have lived in both the UK and Spain (currently living in Malaga) over the years. My friend and I spent a memorable couple of weeks in Torremolinos in the summer of 1989. We went inter railing for a month in Europe and opted for a longer stay in Torremolinos in early mid August, because it seemed really great. We stayed at Hotel Escandinava for the duration of our stay and since I am currently living in Malaga, I went back to Torremolinos for a wee nosey a couple of weeks ago! It has changed so much! Feels more like a proper town and much less touristey now. But surprisingly, in midst of it all new modern buildings was our old hotel, almost as if it had been waiting for me to return all these years! Took some pictures and showed my friend which, of course, resulted in soo many memories from that summer, and looking through some old photos as well. I can see that the Venya nightclub was a regular hangout for us, as well as Svenska Systembolaget. But also a place called "Number One", which, as far as I can see, has not bern mentioned here. We both remember a nightclub/disco where you danced covered in foam from top to toe - was that Venya or Number One? Not expecting anyone to remember us as we were only there for two weeks, though we met and talked to so so many people during those two amazing weeks. It would be great to hear from anyone who spent time in Torremolinos in August 1989, perhaps we'll then remember even more. Great memories from such good times in our youth (we had just turned 19). Thanks for a great blog!

ReplyDeleteAlthough in a period a little later on than being covered here, I came to Torremolinos in 97 from England, a bar not mentioned here before is Bar El Luga in Av Los Manantiales, used to spend a lot of time in this bar with friends, was there most nights for a while, did great tapas there and Paco the owner never used to let us go at the end of the night without an "invitation" round. I remember Paco telling me how great it was in the 80's in Torremolinos saying that there used to be so many people out going to bars in the summer then that Av Los Manantiales outside his bar, the road would be full of people walking around going from bar to bar although to me I thought it was great in the 90's! Never really frequented the brit owned bars as a rule, nearly all my friends were Spanish for a long time and found there were loads of really great and interesting bars to go to. Pipers nightclub (as has been mentioned here before) I think became Fun beach at that time and went there a few times as well as Palladium with the swimming pool. Tinas Bar just opposite Calle San Miguel was a good place to go, very lively and then owned by two guys (Spanish) though this is sadly shut now as is Bar El Luga, great shame.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone remember ‘Snoopy Bar’…it was a Scottish bar in Montemar? My parents owned it 1979-1982.
ReplyDeleteYes I worked there for one season for May and Alan? In 86-87 is this the correct one?
DeleteOh I remember this place been wondering where it was for ages, spent every night there for two weeks in 1986 had a blast was only 17, we had snoopy bar t-shirts and hung out with the boys in the kilts 😀
